Riding etiquette on horse trails
Groups of 3 - 8 riders are ideal with respect to the environment and the operation of the trail. Do not ride off the trails into meadows, fields, or forests and do not disturb the wildlife. Pay attention to local restrictions and regulations on certain trail segments (quiet for wildlife, tree harvesting).
Be considerate of other trail users. Warn riders in front that you intended to pass and slow down to a safe speed. Pass hikers at a gait; pay special attention to cyclists and always pass on the left.
Ride single file on busy or muddy trails. Pay attention to trail surfaces that can damage your horse’s hooves.
Gallop only in safe and open trail segments; for safety purposes step over or around obstacles.
Ride through narrow bends in the trail at a gait.
Should you decide to camp elsewhere than at a station, be sure to choose a reserved campsite or a location approved by the landowner.
Protect the trail environment: remove your waste and clean your horse’s droppings.
Be the eyes and ears of the trails. Warn stations of potential problems (fallen trees, damaged
markings, waste, landslides, etc.).
Respect forest and road laws (concerning dogs, for example).
All riders enter the trail at their own risk. Should you suffer an injury, damage, or an injury caused by the nature of the environment or terrain, you cannot seek compensation from the owner of the land, forest, or any other involved subject.
Remember that other people on the trail needn’t necessarily be knowledgeable of horses and their reactions. Your behaviour creates the image of local riders. Answer any questions politely; at that moment you represent all riders.
